With 30 years experience as a ludotherapist in a pediatric oncology department as a facilitator of creative and re-creative expression, having found a critical change in young people’s availability for interaction, mainly in the pre- and adolescent age group (somewhat caused by the “technological revolution”), this pilot project, Pearls of Life, started in 2020 a support art-therapy intervention in order to transform the tendency toward multimedia isolation into an innovative resource for creative and recreational self-expression.
Its intervention material is precisely what attracts our young people (and most of us by now), electronic devices: mobile phones, tablets and PCs, especially for audio-visual content.
Through these, boys and girls paradoxically “isolate themselves so as not to be isolated” and, thanks to technological innovation and communication, open new doors and prospects for interaction, which however must be oriented towards personal and cultural evolution.
The PoL Project therefore plans to use the most attractive language for the “young people of today” and of our times, to bypass resistance and their apparent lack of interest in relationship with educational figures, thanks to the prospect of learning new creative video construction techniques to express their own ‘story’, actual or imaginary.
In addition to increasing the sense of identity and creativity, or the constructive-combative strength of the young video-maker, another value of these productions should be considered: the “community” one, obtained through their sharing and dissemination with a simple link on other devices and on social platforms, or in movie theaters (for videos that win competitions), as well as through the production of artistic films as a compendium and periodic crowning of the experience.
